Sheldon Theragood a native of Houston Texas puts his money and his time where his mouth is. He is an author of the book “Whatever It Takes”, public servant, youth mentor, police officer and philanthropist. He is the founder of TheraGood Deeds in Houston which is a nonprofit organization. Sheldon never planned to do any of this. His goal was to play in the NBA but God had other plans for him. Sheldon shares his story on how it all started.

Sheldon, tell me how this all got started?

Well, I started out playing basketball and sports. I’m going back to the beginning. Growing up with my dad and brother I had a role model which was my brother and my dad put us in sports. The only thing I ever knew or wanted to do was make it to the NBA. When I got to high school, I did great. I was an all-American Nominee, played in the All-Star game, played on television and a lot of college coaches were looking at me. So, I’m thinking this dream is coming. As I continued my journey playing basketball, I had a lot of college coaches that wanted to talk with me but, one thing happened I didn’t make the SAT score. But I had another opportunity to take the ACT and I did make the score on that.

What happened after that?

So, those schools that were interested in me no longer had interest in me because I had to go to Junior college basically, I had to start all over. Cool I’m not tripping. I got a scholarship to a Junior College. I’ll go to the ball and then I’ll be ready. At least I thought that was the plan. But the coach really wasn’t playing me that much. I just wanted to get in the game and play some games. I played well and some games I didn’t play well, and the coach wasn’t the player coach type. Then I begin having pains in my hip. The front hip on my right side became so painful it was stopping me from playing ball. I went to the doctor and was told I had Osteoarthritis arthritis in my hip. I was told if I continued to play, I would have to have a hip replacement later. Then my left hip started to hurt. I’m almost to the NBA. I just need to get through college but when the list came up my name wasn’t on it, I was cut from the team.

Where do you go from here?

When you watch your friends make it to the NBA it really hurts but, this is when God takes over, this is what makes my life, my book, and my story so special. I had to figure out it wasn’t about me; it was more about God and what He had for me. I know whatever He has for me is the best plan ever. I started helping the coaches coach other youth, helping them make it to the NBA. So, now I’m loving something else. Now I’m loving kids. I found passion and I found purpose in that. when people ask me how you do know when you’ve found your purpose. I tell them because you can feel it.
