Before you toss that old oversize hoodie into the donation pile, let’s give the hoodie a new life cycle with you. For this DIY, we are transforming an oversized hoodie or a hoodie dress into a two-piece cropped hoodie and mini-skirt.

For this project, you will need the following:

Oversized hoodie or long hoodie dress

Ruler

Pencil

Fabric scissors

Fabric glue

Elastic

Needle and thread

Step One: Trace and Cut

To find the best spot to cut out your skirt, use another skirt! Place a mini skirt of a length that you like on top of the hoodie. Make sure they are even at the bottom. Place your elastic at the top of the skirt and trace a horizontal line. This is to ensure that you allow enough room to sew in the elastic. Cut the hoodie along that line. You now have the two pieces for your new outfit.

Step Two: Fold and Glue

Flip the skirt inside out and place the elastic along the top edge. Cut a slit on one end of the skirt that is slightly longer than the width of the elastic. This allows room for the glue when folded over.

Place magazines or newspapers in between the layers to prevent the glue from sticking them together. Take the fabric glue and lightly dab glue all the way around along the edge of the fold. You will be creating a pocket or tunnel for the elastic to go through. Let dry for a couple hours.

Step Three: Measure the Elastic

You will be creating two pieces of elastic. One for the top and one for the skirt. Wrap the elastic around your body where the crop top will end. Cut the elastic according to that length. Then proceed to wrap the elastic around where the top of your skirt should lie. Cut the elastic according to that length.

Step Four:

Secure a safety pin at the end of your first elastic piece, then work the elastic inside and all the way around the folded opening. Hand stitch the elastic ends together and repeat the process for the skirt’s waistband. Scrunch the fabric evenly around the elastic bands.

Now you have a trendy cropped hoodie and miniskirt set!
