If you are looking for the perfect date night, then I suggest you go to Mermaids & Cowboys in La Jolla at 1251 Prospect St, La Jolla, CA 92037.

Why?

Because the food is simply divine and rekindles that love or impresses the new beau in your life. You can call or go online to make reservations, which I highly recommend because it gets busy after 5pm. That’s a good thing because a busy restaurant is a good place to eat.

Now the menu is straightforward but that doesn’t mean it’s going to be easy to pick your appetizer for dessert. After going back and forth we splurged and ordered the Herbed Crispy Fries, Bread & Butter, Lobster Mac and Cheese, Chicken Garlic Pasta, and Jerk Salmon with Toasted Coconut Rice.

Everything was a 10 but let’s break down the flavor profiles.

Herbed Crispy Fries

The first were perfectly crispy and seasoned. Unlike snowflakes each fry was not different. They were all perfectly fried to a golden crisp with an even amount of seasoning.

Bread & Butter

Now my only concern was that we needed more of their house made butter which we could have received but we didn’t want to take all of their butter. It’s that good and smeared on the homemade yeast rolls was the perfect pairing.

Lobster Mac and Cheese

We shared this and I’m glad we did because honestly this could be shared with 3 people. It’s cheesy, and the outside is oven baked with crispy edges just how we like our mac and cheese. They weren’t cheap with the lobster portion and you find you get a couple extra pieces that fall on the side. To top it off, they add extra cheese sauce as if we don’t need anymore cheese, and yes we do!

Chicken Garlic Pasta

This will make you rethink that basic Alfredo you get at most restaurants. This simple butter, milk, and lemon sauce has nutty notes that we couldn’t quite put our fingers on if there might be a pinch of truffle in it. Obviously it’s G-14 classified and we don’t blame them. The chicken was perfectly blackened and juicy, which is important especially with chicken breast. Noodles Al dente and topped with extra parmesan shavings.

Jerk Salmon with Toasted Coconut Rice

Okay, so the salmon was cooked to perfection and I’m picking on cooked salmon because I like mine crispy outside without being dry on the inside. It was just that. The jerk sauce was perfectly spicy with a hint of sweetness. The toasted coconut rice was almost a dish on its own because of the coconut and creaminess. Now the star was the pineapple salsa which was great. This is like the butter I wanted more of but that’s because I probably wanted to take some home to top my other meals later in the week.

Next time we go back I’m going to have to try the Fish & Chips & Pan Seared Halibut because we saw the table next to us order them and I just wanted to grab a little when no one was looking because it looked and smelled so good.

I’m coming back for that Gooey Butter Cake as a promise to myself because I was too full from the feast but the way our server described it I figured it’s a must. You know how you owe yourself the finer things in life.
