Although social media showcases Freaky Boiz talent, you won’t find much about the rap duo’s origin story. Thankfully, I was able to interview the duo and find out where their beginning of their music started.

Pierre shared how he and Terrance met in college way before the streaming era and right when Youtube started picking up. They started creating their own raps to upload to familiar sites like YouTube as a parody. They didn’t think much of these parodies they posted; and yet, their songs ended up going viral.

Terrence touched on how the group was formed before going “viral” was an idea. Their fan base grew as people started sharing their videos and songs. Out of these songs that were meant as a joke, fans gave the pair their name: The Freaky Boiz.  We are all aware of how technology, and social media have continued to be a tool to help artists get their mark, but “Freaky Boiz” started before that era. As they grew in popularity, their fans started asking for live performances. Of course, the pair listened. It was so inspiring to learn that the group listened to their audience and found their passion in that.

The Freaky Boiz both identify as gay. Terrance and Pierre both knew that their sexual identity, along with being African American, and making rap music, made things tricky by constantly adding a target to their backs. But their passion and tenacity kept them pushing harder toward their goals. They want their audience to gain more than inspiration but action from their music. They are clear examples on how being put through obstacles in life should not be something to keep you away from your dreams. Being not only Black men but also Gay men, the duo shines for the LGBTQ+ community and the Black community.

Pierre touched on the message the group wishes to portray in their music, that being their audience can relate to them on personal levels. With Terrance and Pierre both being able to recall the struggles and hardships they grew up with, they want their audience members, who might be going through the same thing, to get hope from their music. He also mentioned how both he and Terrance were able to make it out of the hood and become participants of higher education. These memories are what helped the duo realize how long they would go in their journey to stardom.

Terrence says he is inspired by artists like Kanye West. Being from Chicago himself, Terrence found himself relating to Kanye due to him becoming a well-known name within the city of Chicago and making it big. The group mentioned other artists such as Trina, Young Jeezy and Lil Wayne, and how they admired not only these artists’ journeys but their work in general.
