Review:

Once again, Justin Simien, the creator and writer of Dear White People, has succeeded in bringing humor, satire, and cultural nuance to the screen. He skillfully led us on an incredibly enjoyable adventure, all the while highlighting the characters’ relatable human qualities. As you watch the movie, you find yourself constantly laughing while also delving into the complexities of each character. There are various emotional experiences, ranging from feelings of loneliness and inadequacy to forgiveness. However, he manages to execute it brilliantly, ensuring that the audience doesn’t feel coerced or experience any disconnect between the humorous and serious elements of the film.

The true breakout star of the show is the talented young actor, Chase Dillon. With notable roles in “First Wives Club,” “The Underground Railroad,” and “The Harder They Fall,” Dillon truly shines and steals the spotlight. He has the ability to portray the various emotions that Travis is going through as he moves to a new city and home, all while adding a touch of comedy. His performance has a certain uniqueness to it, as he manages to make Travis feel uncomfortable. In a peculiar manner, he also brings to mind the kid from school who is aware of his differences but embraces them without any qualms. However, it is still important to have a sense of belonging. The role of Travis can easily be taken too far, which can make the audience feel disconnected. Chase ensures that we stay connected throughout the performance.

LaKeith Stanfield, who plays the character Ben Matthias, and Rosario Dawson, who portrays Gabbie, both deliver performances that effectively depict characters struggling to overcome their own internal obstacles. Both individuals have been somewhat affected by recent past events, which has caused them to have a slightly jaded perspective when it comes to their interactions with each other.

Owen Wilson, portraying Father Kent, Tiffany Haddish as Harriet, and Danny DeVito in the role of Bruce Davis, deliver the comedic performances we have come to expect from them. Moreover, each of them adds a human element to their characters, which further endears them to the audience.

The movie was primarily a comedy, but it also contained hidden life lessons that were revealed through the various characters. We can all relate to some of the major lessons learned. It is perfectly acceptable to begin anew and continue to progress in our lives. At some point, it is common for all of us to experience self-doubt. However, it is crucial to discover the inner strength that lies within us in order to overcome it. Our true strength is determined by the extent to which we believe in ourselves.

Make sure you check it out tomorrow in theaters.
